Vintage bird pillows

Sommige patronen vind ik zo leuk dat ik er meteen helemaal wild mee ga. Dan wil ik er meteen een hele stapel van maken. En dan was het geval met het vogelkussen in 'Birds' van Mollie Makes. Toen ik het patroon zag, dacht ik meteen: wil ik, wil ik, wil ik.

Some sewing patterns are so cute that I immediately go wirl with it. They make me want to sew a whole bunch immediately. And that was the case when I saw the bird pillow pattern in Feathered Friends' by Mollie Makes.

Ik dook dus meteen de kast in en rommelde net zo lang totdat ik leuke vintage en retro stofjes te pakken had. Vervolgens stapte ik op de fiets richting Utrechtse stoffenmarkt om mijn verzameling vilt eens flink aan te vullen. En toen als een dolle: knippen, strijken, naaien-met-de-hand en naaien-met-de-naaimachine, vullen en dichtnaaien. Tadaaaah!

So I took a dive in my stash until I found some cool retro and vintage fabric, then on my bike to the Utrecht fabric market to increase my collection of felt. And then, like a mad woman: cutting, ironing, sewing-by-hand, sewing-with-machine, stuff and handstitch closed. And... tadaaa!

Vier kipkes, kijk nou toch wat een gezelligheid. Ik weet ook niet waarom ik ze zo geweldig vind, waarschijnlijk een combinatie van de vintage/ retro stof en de vleugels. Ik heb van die massaproductie wel vreselijke kramp in mijn hand aan over gehouden, maar ik vind het de moeite waard/

Four chicks. Look at how happy they are. I don't know why I have such a soft spot for them, probably the combination of the retro/vintage fabic and the felt wings. All that mass-sewing left me with some cramps in my hand, but it was all worth it.

DIY dress refashion

Geachte heer/mevrouw H&M, mocht u zich afvragen waarom ik geen enorme fan ben van jullie keten... ik licht het bij deze graag toe. Omdat er bij uw winkels altijd (echt áltijd, al kom je 1 minuut na openingstijd binnen zeilen) een enorme rij voor de paskamer staat en dit mij tot zelfmoord beweegt, ben ik nooit (maar dan ook nóóit) geneigd tot passen in uw winkels. Dus als ik dan eens iets leuks zie, neem ik het mee zonder te passen. Ik heb maat Small. Dit betekent dat als ik een kledingstuk maat Small mee neem, dit vaak ook past en geschikt is voor mij. Dus als ik vervolgens voor de spiegel sta in dit kledingstuk en het woord 'Hobbezak' in me opkomt, ben ik niet geamuseerd. Zeg maar.

Dear sir/ madam at H&M, in case you were wondering why I am not a big fan of your chain, hereby I'd like to elaborate. Because there are always (seriously álways, even if you walk in just after opening time) huge lines in front of your changeing rooms, sometimes until the back of the store (and those lines make me think suicidal thoughts), I buy things without thrying them on. Now, I am a Small. This means that if I take home a piece of clothing labelled size Small, this should fit me. So when I try on this size Small at home and the word 'MooMoo' pops up in my head, I am slightly unamused. So to say.

Nu kostte uw kledingstuk slechts €3 (ik wil niet wéten hoeveel u uw werknemers in Bangladesh/ India/ China betaalt...) dus terug fietsen om het te ruilen of terug te brengen, vond ik niet de moeite waard. Ik neem aan dat u daar op gokt? Dat mensen te lui zijn om uw goedkope kleding terug te brengen? In ieder geval, u heeft mazzel. Want ik ben in het bezit van een naaimachine en besloot uw goedkope kledingstuk aan te passen, zodat het wél past op maat Small.

Now, your piece of clothing costed me €3 (and I seriously don't want to know what you pay your employees in Bagladesh/ India/ China to make this...) so cycling back to the store and return it, it just wasn't worth the trouble. I guess this is what you count on? That people just don't take the trouble to return their cheap clothing that doesn't fit? Anyway, you're in luck. I am the proud owner of a sewing machine and I am nót afraid to use it. So I will use it to make this 'size Small' actually fit onto a size Small. 

Bij deze presenteer ik u bewijsstuk A. De rode jurk kocht ik van u voor €3, hij veinsde maat S te zijn. Maar zoals u kunt zien aan het groene hemdje, dat daadwerkelijk maat S heeft, kunt u zien dat u uw werknemers in Bangladesh/ India/ China werkelijk eens wat meer moet gaan betalen, want zoals u ziet... maat S? Aan mijn hoela!

Wat men dus doet om de jurk wel op maat te maken? Draai de jurk/shirt binnenstebuiten en speld te zijkanten op elkaar. Bepaal hoeveel je de jurk wil innemen en teken dit langs beide zijkanten af, de vorm van de jurk volgend van de oksel tot onder. Ik nam dit shirt zo'n 3 centimeter in aan beide kanten (jawel, ik nam het 6 centimeter in! Maar zoals je ziet 10 cm had ook gekund).

I present you within exhibit A. I bought this red dress for €3 and it acted like it was size Small. But as you can see from the green top that is actually size S... this dress is anything but a size Small. H&M really needs to start paying their employees in China/ Bangladesh/ India better, 'cause Size Small? No way. 

So what you do to resize this dress? You turn it inside out and pin the sides together. Decide how muc you want to take in the dress and draw that on the fabric, from arm pit to the bottom seam whilst follwing the model of the dress. I took in 3 cm of both sides. Yes, I had to take the dress in 6 centimeters (but 10 cm was also possible). Size small? Right...

Zo kun je zien hoe ik de vorm van de jurk volgde. Ik heb geen overlocker (anders kun je die natuurlijk lekker roetjs snel gebruiken). Maar ik naaide de stof aan elkaar met een lange steek, zodat de stof lekker kan rekken en strekken. En let op: dit is stretch-achtige stof, dus trek niet aan de stof als je deze stikt, anders gaat het lubberen.

Here you see how I stitched along the shape of the dress. I used a long stitch, so the fabric can stretch like it wants to. This is stretchy fabric, so don't pull it while you're stitching it, otherwise you'll pull it out of shape.

Knip de overtollige stof af.

Nu zaten er aan mijn jurk ook lusjes om een koordje doorheen te halen. Ik tekende af waar de lusjes moesten komen en tornde toen de lusje uit de stof die overbleef. Op de plek waar de lusjes moesten komen maakte ik de steekjes even los, deed de lusjes tussen de stof en stikte er weer overheen.

Now, my dress had little loops so I can put a ribbon or little belt through. I drew on the dress where the loops should be. So I used the seam ripper to get the loops from the leftover fabric. I torn stitches of the place where I wanted the loops to be, placed the loops there and stitched them in place.

Stretch stof rafelt niet, dus eigenlijk hoef je niet te zigzaggen. Maar de naden zien er wel zo netjes uit als je het wel doet, dus voila. En als je een overlocker hebt, dan is het gemakkelijk natuurlijk.

Stretch fabric doesn't fray, so you don't have to zigzag. But the seams do look better if you do zigzag: so I did. 

En dan is het klaar! Nog geen uurtje werk. En goed gelukt. Ik vond het in ieder geval wel de moeite waard. Om die véél te grote jurk van H&M heb ik lang gemopperd, terwijl hij in een hoekje stof lag te vangen. En toen besloot ik toch maar om er iets aan te doen, in plaats van te blijven mokken. En ik ben blij dat ik eraan gedaan heb. Maar het zal jullie niet verbazen: mijn geld geef ik liever niet meer bij H&M uit (zelfs geen stomme €3). Er zijn gewoon te veel redenen om het niet meer te doen!

And then it's finished. It's less than an hour of work. I think it was quite worth refashioning the dress. My oh my did I was pissed off about this way too large H&M dress, it was literally in the corner of my bedroom for a year before I decided to do something about it. But I'm glad I did. But I bet it doesn't surprise you: I rather not spend my money at H&M anymore, not even some lousy €3. There are just too many reasons not to.

Reden waarom ik deze jurk dan toch kocht (toen ik nog niet beter wist!)... de kleur. Ja, die vond ik echt helemaal geweldig! Staat me supergoed en helemaal met deze zalige blauwe pumps erbij.

Reason why I did buy this dress (when I didn't know ant better!)... the colour. Oh how I love this shade of red, I loved it instantly. It looks good on me, especially with these petrol pumps. 

And the winner is...

Maar liefst 58 reacties kwamen er binnen op de Give Away, wat super zeg! Daar waren zowel Angela als ik behoorlijk van onder de indruk. Het was erg leuk om over al jullie vakantieplannen te lezen. Die van mij mogen er ook zijn: ik ga met mijn lief door Marokko trekken en heb er héél veel zin in. Ook heb ik nog een werktrip voor de boeg.

Jullie bekeken echt massaal Angela's winkel Ambela, echt superleuk. Ik moet zeggen dat het dan ook echt een snoepwinkel is. Zelf ben ik dus helemaal verliefd op de 'After the rain' shopper, daar kun je echt wel mee gezien worden op citytrip dacht ik zo. 

En helemaal leuk: Angela biedt 10% korting aan in haar winkel met de code HAPPY. Kijk, dan komen die leuke paspoorthoes, autopapierenmapjes en mooie shoppers natuurlijk een stuk dichterbij.

WIP Wednesday: one more week

Met zijn drieën een heel tijdschrift in elkaar zetten: dat is pittig. Dat wisten we natuurlijk al toen we eraan begonnen. Maar nummer drie was echt een uitdaging: druk met een fulltime baan, druk met opleidingen en oh ja, een sociaal leven zo nu en dan zou ook leuk geweest zijn... Dat volgende week het derde nummer van Robin Magazine alweer in de winkel ligt, dat is dus best bijzonder!

Making an entire magazine with just 3 peoples, that's tough. We knew that when we started this. But the third issue of Robin Magazine was a real challenge: busy with a fulltime job, busy with some education and oh wait... what was that thing calles a social life again? So, the fact that the third issue of Robin Magazine is for sale next week: it's pretty special.

Ik kan in alle eerlijkheid zeggen dat ik elk vrij kwartiertje (en dat waren er helaas veel te weinig) in Robin Magazine 3 heb gestopt. Interviews, achtergrondverhalen, recepten bedenken en fotograferen, een naaipatroon maken... het leek hier thuis soms behoorlijk op een uitdragerij! De uitdrukking 'kip zonder kop' is ook weleens in me op gekomen. Maar het is er, bijna.

I can honestly say that I spent every spare 15 minutes (and I didn't have enough of them unfortunately) in Robin Magazine 3. Interviews, features, figuing out recipes and food photography, making a sewing pattern... it looked like my house was exploded every once in a while! But, the magazine is there. Almost.

Maar Robin Magazine 3 mag er écht wel weer zijn. Het is namelijk een echt zomerboek geworden: je weet wel, zo'n zomerboek dat je vroeger op de achterbank had als je met je ouders op vakantie ging. Alleen is dit zomerboek een vakantie-doe-boek voor volwassenen! Spelletjes, lekker-lees-verhalen, DIY's, tutorials... Robin Magazine 3 staat er barstens vol mee. En helemaal in retro stijl!

But I have to say: Robin Magaizne 3 is so worth it. It has become an ultimate summer book and it's completely filled with lovely features to read, games, sewing and crochet tutorials and recipes. And all in retro style.

My veggie patch: first harvest

Van iets als 'doorschieten' had ik natuurlijk weleens gehoord, maar ik dacht dat dat toch meer hoorde bij groenten als andijvie, sla of boerenkool. Dus toen ik gisteren héle kleine knopjes in de spinazie zag, stond ik toch wel even te kijken. Tsja, een gewas als spinazie kan natuurlijk ook gewoon in bloei komen te staan. Maar zo snel, daar had ik even niet op gerekend. Gelukkig hielp vriend Google me uit de droom: oogsten, en gauw een beetje. Want zodra die knoppen helemaal zijn opgekomen, of zelfs zijn uitgekomen, is je spinazie niet meer te eten. Zou dat even zonde zijn van alle moeite!

Of course I kinda knew that veggies could grow so hard they would grow wrong. But I thought that veggies like endive or lettuce would do that. Not spinach. So when I saw some teeny tiny bulbs in my spinach yesterday, I was surprised! I guess, thinking all logically and such and such, of course spinach can come into bloom. I just didn't think it would happen so soon. Luckily, my friend Google helped me and the message was clear: harvest, NOW! 'Cause if the bulbs get bigger and start blooming you can just throw the spinach out. And that would be a waste of all my troubles, right!

Al met al plukte ik een vergiet vol met spinazie, daar was ik toch wel even verguld mee. Vorig jaar heb ik tevergeefs geprobeerd om courgettes en tomaten aan de praat te krijgen. Maar dit jaar is alle moeite toch niet helemaal voor niets geweest. Deze spinazieblaadjes zien er schitterend uit.

All in all, I ended up with a strainer filled with spinach and I have to say: I was utterly chuffed. Last year I tried to hard, without any success, to grow zucchinis and tomatos. So I am happy this year, all my troubles paid off. 'Cause those leaves look good.

Kijk, dat was al flink gegroeid! Maar als je goed kijkt zie je dus ook die héle kleine knopjes. Ik heb nergens op internet kunnen vinden wat ik daar nou precies mee moest. Ik had ze natuurlijk kunnen laten uitkomen, had ik meteen zaaigoed voor volgend jaar gehad. Maar omdat ze zo klein waren, heb ik ze toch maar uit de planten geknipt, zodat de kleinere blaadjes nog even fijn door kunnen groeien. Was dat de goede keuze?

See, how much they grew! But if you look closely, you see the tiny bulbs. Now I couldn't find anywhere on the internet what to do about them. I guess if I wanted to sow spinach again next spring, I should've let them bloom. But since they were so tiny, I decided to cut them out of the plant so hopefully the smaller spinach leaves will still grow a little more. Was that the right decision?

En het leukste volgde natuurlijk vanavond, toen wij onze eerste maaltijd uit eigen tuin aten! Altijd heel schokkend om te zien hoe weinig er van spinazie overblijft als je het gaat wokken (tsja, had ik er maar salade van moeten maken, keuzes keuzes), maar met een uitje, pijnboompitten en rozijnen was het superlekker. We aten het met bulgur pilav en krokante Serranoham. Zo lekker!

And the best part was of course that tonight we ate our first meal from our own veggie patch. It was kinda shocking to see how much spinach shrinks when you put it in the wadjang (oh well, if I didn't want it to shring I should've made a salad with it. Decisions, decisions), but with some stirfried onion, garlic, pinetree nuts and raisins, it was really good. We ate it with bulgur pilav and crispy Serrano ham. Loved it!
